Final Dawn Season 1 The Thrilling PostApocalyptic Series Mike Kraus 9780615721514 Books

I'm glad I didn't find this series until it was completed because I loved this first book. I stayed up all night to finish it because I just had to find out why and how the events in the book transpired. The reveal of what happened was brilliant, combining technology beyond the human ability to control and evil, arrogant men who think they can control it.

The story is told from the perspective of four people: Rachel, Marcus, Nancy, and Leonard. They somehow survive an apocalyptic event and spend the rest of the book not understanding what happened, running from what remains, and finally uniting to try to save what remains of the world.

Rachel is a scientist who knows what happened, but doesn't know why.
Marcus was out camping and runs first-hand into what is left of the world.
Nancy was driving to a new job, and I don't think we've seen what she is capable of yet.
Leonard was in the tunnels under New York City and is shown to be surprisingly intelligent and resourceful.

The world they are living in is terrifying. They find out what happened at the end of the book and find out what they have to do to prevent it from getting worse. I am very much looking forward to the next two books, and I highly recommend this one.

Final Dawn Season 1 The Thrilling PostApocalyptic Series Mike Kraus 9780615721514 Books Reviews

This book ended up being nothing at all like what I thought it would be. I expected a normal post apocalyptic story, with the usual bad guys dropping the bombs...not the case.

While there were times things got just a little too technical for me, or just a bit too unbelievable, I still enjoyed the story. I can't imagine anyone being able to stop reading this without finding out what the swarms were. That alone was enough to make me finish the season, but I also really liked the characters. The dialogue could get kind of cheesy and overly dramatic, but I chose to ignore that.

Overall, I definitely recommend this! I purchased it on a whim (mainly because the cover caught my eye), and am glad I gave it a shot. I'm really looking forward Episode 6.
This is one of those books where you have to read the whole series, so in this way it is like a TV show where you can't just watch one episode. In the first book you get to know the four primary characters, if you like them, you will continue with the series, if you don't then you won't. I have not gotten into the next episode but I will. The reviews on this book are are mixed and bought it because it was cheap and the plot sound interesting but there is a science fiction element to it so you must take it as entertainment and not to literally. Like I said if you get hooked in the main characters, you will read on it not you haven't lost too much money!!
The good The story was at least interesting, but be warned...it ends on a cliffhanger...I HATE THAT!

#1...the mix of present tense when relating incidents in the past, and the use of the past tense for the present action drove me to distraction.
#2...siphoning gas from a modern car with a garden hose is not possible.
#3...hair on a dog's neck doesn't rise...but it will on his back.
#4...triple spaces between each and every paragraph made me crazy, and finally...
#5...typos too numerous to mention...if they were the only flaw, I wouldn't have mentioned them.
Not really comparable to books like "Grid Down" or the 3 book series by A. American but if you can't get enough of this kind of stuff, its good reading. It's more like reading a screen play than a novel. TV these days is so full of commercials that reading has returned as an enjoyable pastime that scientists say is actually better for you - exercising your entire brain instead of just one segment while training large sections of your mind to be dormant. I got into this after reading Grid Down and was disappointed, shelving it for the books by A. American. I'll get back to it at some point though.
If post-apocalyptic fiction is your game, Final Dawn will make you happy. A combination of good writing, an intriguing and unique story, non-stop action and a full cast of varied characters makes this an excellent book. I've settled on Rachel as my favorite at long last, only after I finished the book, simply because of her relentless drive. None of the characters overpower each other, though, and their individual talents seem to be well suited to their tasks and the situations they find themselves in aren't outlandish, either.

Mike's writing style is similar to the famous authors in this genre and if he keeps developing his craft, he should go a long way. The only complaint is that I don't want to wait a month for the start of Season 2!
Writing is good. The characters have some depth. Too much time is spent dwelling on the rape/murder fantasies that are wrapped up with the "people are bad" philosophy of life. Also government is portrayed as entirely corrupt (at least so far). Also a bit too much catering to the survivalist "certainty" that there will be an apocalypse. But on the other hand, we have a variety of good characters, a story with good pacing, and the chance to explore a nuclear ravaged landscape without all that pesky radiation, which is interesting.

As a software engineer, I don't buy the AI. I'm not a specialist there, but I know enough to know that we won't have anything like meaningful artificial intelligence AKA The Terminator anytime soon. It would have been more believable to me if there had been a regular nuclear war with the nanites used as cleaning up tools that worked destructively due to their emergency use. Still the whole idea of the nuclear devastation playing second fiddle to the real villains is a nice alternative to the typical story.
Trust me it's really worth it. Very well told. Adventure/sci-fi/survivalist theme is accessible to even the novice. Well told and compelling. You can really get into the storyline and characters. Can't wait till next season.
